The Canadian countertenor Scott Belluz is rapidly gaining recognition as an engaging vocal artist. Praised for his “warm, rich voice and impeccable coloratura,” (LaMarseillaise) Scott brings his committed artistry to repertoire ranging from 17th century to newly composed works.

Highlights of the 2008-2009 season will include the role of Athamas in Handel’s Semele with Pacific Opera Victoria as well as Opera Briefs and Opera To Go with Tapestry New Opera in Toronto.

Recent performances have inlcuded the role of Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream conducted by David Agler at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Bach’s Magnificat with the Ottawa Choral Society and the role of Andronicus in Handel’s Tamerlano for Opera in Concert with the Aradia Ensemble and Kevin Mallon, conductor.

In the 2006-07 season, Mr. Belluz made his American debut in the roles of Human Frailty and Pisandro in Chicago Opera Theatre’s production of Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria conducted by Jane Glover. He also reprised the role of Medoro in Handel’s Orlando in the Festival de Chartres under the direction of Jean Marc Aymes.

Following studies at the University of Toronto, The Britten-Pears School and the Banff Centre for the Arts, Scott was admitted to the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, England where he completed a Master’s Degree while performing extensively throughout the United Kingdom. Performances in the 2001 Festival D’Aix-en-Provence, led Scott to France where he was subsequently chosen to be a young artist at the Centre National D’Artistes Lyriques in Marseille. This resulted in numerous performances throughout southern France including: the role of Medoro in Handel’s Orlando in Marseille, Tarrascon and at the Festival D’Antibes, the Pergolesi Stabat Mater in Aix-en-Provence, and recitals in St.Remy de Provence, Marseille, Avignon and Toulon.

Other performance highlights in Canada include: the role of Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Royal Conservatory of Music, conducted by Timothy Vernon, Charpentier’s Missa Assumpta and In Nativitatem with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Britten’s Canticle IV and the world premiere of The Colour Blue, a piece for soprano and countertenor, by Toronto composer Erik Ross. Scott is a past recipient of grants from the Chalmers Foundation of the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
