The Canadian countertenor Scott Belluz is
rapidly gaining recognition as an engaging vocal artist.
Praised for his “warm, rich voice and impeccable
coloratura,” (LaMarseillaise) Scott brings his committed
artistry to repertoire ranging from 17th century
to newly composed works.
Highlights of the 2008-2009 season will include the role of
Athamas in Handel’s Semele with Pacific Opera
Victoria as well as Opera Briefs and Opera To Go
with Tapestry New Opera in Toronto.
Recent
performances have inlcuded the role of Oberon in Britten's
A Midsummer Night's Dream conducted by David Agler at
the Banff Centre for the Arts, Bach’s Magnificat with
the Ottawa Choral Society and the role of Andronicus in
Handel’s Tamerlano for Opera in Concert with the
Aradia Ensemble and Kevin Mallon, conductor.
In
the 2006-07 season, Mr. Belluz made his American debut in
the roles of Human Frailty and Pisandro in Chicago Opera
Theatre’s production of Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria
conducted by Jane Glover. He also reprised the role of
Medoro in Handel’s Orlando in the Festival de
Chartres under the direction of Jean Marc Aymes.
Following studies at the University of Toronto, The
Britten-Pears School and the Banff Centre for the Arts,
Scott was admitted to the prestigious Royal Academy of Music
in London, England where he completed a Master’s Degree
while performing extensively throughout the United Kingdom.
Performances in the 2001 Festival D’Aix-en-Provence, led
Scott to France where he was subsequently chosen to be a
young artist at the Centre National D’Artistes Lyriques in
Marseille. This resulted in numerous performances throughout
southern France including: the role of Medoro in Handel’s
Orlando in Marseille, Tarrascon and at the Festival
D’Antibes, the Pergolesi Stabat Mater in
Aix-en-Provence, and recitals in St.Remy de Provence,
Marseille, Avignon and Toulon.
Other performance highlights in Canada include: the role of
Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
at the Royal Conservatory of Music, conducted by
Timothy Vernon, Charpentier’s Missa Assumpta
and In Nativitatem with the Tafelmusik Baroque
Orchestra, Britten’s Canticle IV and the world
premiere of The Colour Blue, a piece for soprano and
countertenor, by Toronto composer Erik Ross. Scott is a past
recipient of grants from the Chalmers Foundation of the
Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
